Aspiration in alveolar fricatives in Bodo

چکیده
Aspirated fricatives are typologically rare in world’s languages, occurring mostly in the Sino–Tibetan languages. However, they are hitherto unreported in the Tibeto–Burman languages spoken in North–East India. In this study we present data from Bodo, a Tibeto–Burman language spoken in Assam, India and argue that the Bodo voiceless alveolar fricative is an aspirated voiceless alveolar fricative. To substantiate our argument, we consider a set of acoustic analysis and compare the results with acoustic properties reported for Korean, as it attests aspirated alveolar fricative. Results confirm that while aspiration duration and F1 onset follows the pattern reported for aspirated fricatives in Korean, intensity, H1–H2, centre of gravity and onset f0, do not have any patterns consistent with aspiration.

A Study of Korean Alveolar Fricatives an Acoustic Analysis, Synthesis and Perception Experiment
Korean has two types of voiceless alveolar fricatives One is called aspirated and the other tense (Kagaya, 1974) The aspirated fricatives have also been called lax fricatives because phonolog1cally they act hke a lax obstruent, undergomg a set of processes that lax stops do For example, Korean lax stops and Isl undergo post-obstruent tensmg {Sohn 1999) Aspirated stops (e g, ch), however, do not...

Objective: Anesthetic techniques like the Akinosi technique were introduced to surmount the problems of the conventional inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) technique. This study aimed to compare the local anesthetic efficacy of IANB via the conventional and Akinosi techniques in patients presenting to the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of School of Dentistry, Shahid Beheshti University. متن کاملThe Cytology of Subcutaneous Chest Wall Metastasis Originating from Bronchiolo- Alveolar Carcinoma
Bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma with subcutaneous chest wall metastasis is a very rare presentation. A case of 36- year-old male with metastatic subcutaneous chest nodule of bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma, diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology, is reported here. Cutaneous metastases are of diagnostic importance because they may be the first manifestation of an undiscovered internal malig...
متن کاملEffects of Two Linguistically Proximal Varieties on the Spectral and Coarticulatory Properties of Fricatives: Evidence from Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek
Several studies have explored the acoustic structure of fricatives, yet there has been very little acoustic research on the effects of dialects on the production of fricatives. This article investigates the effects of two linguistically proximal Modern Greek dialects, Athenian Greek and Cypriot Greek on the temporal, spectral, and coarticulatory properties of fricatives and aims to determine th...
متن کاملFricative rhotics in Nusu
Among the world’s languages fricatives are the rarest types of rhotics. They are found in a few African and European languages [13] and as allophones in some Romance languages [4, 8, 9, 12, 17]. Data from Nusu demonstrate the presence of rhotic alveolar fricatives in Asia. Even though they have sometimes been transcribed as retroflex sibilants in earlier studies [11, 20], phonotactic patterns s...
